On consecutive days, the course record has been tied. Taylor Floyd from Macon, GA fired an incredible round of 63 on Saturday. Taking full advantage of "moving day". Taylor's round included 7 Birdies, an Eagle, and one Bogie on the short but tricky par 3 16th. A hole that had it's share of bogies today.
Floyd ended the day at 9-under par for the tournament after firing 66 and 75 on Thursday and Friday. Leaving the spectators wondering what happened on the usually benign back nine Friday where Floyd played the nine hole stretch five over par.
Derek Chang played a consistent round of 68 and will be sleeping with the lead of the 80th Southeastern Amateur which is being played during the Centennial Anniversary of the CCC. Chang will take his four stroke lead to the course tomorrow in his attempt to capture the Jordan-Martin Trophy.
The final day is perfectly framed for an incredible finish with 10 players at -5 or better and firmly in contention. Cameron Knight and Seath Lauer carded 67 and 68 respectively to finish at -8 and -7. Zeyu He is also at -7 after an even par 71 Saturday. Antonio Asistio has to be wondering what it's going to take after signing for his 1-under 70 on Saturday but actually losing ground. Good friend Rufino Bayron shot 68 on Saturday to finish at -5 overall.
An interesting note: Jordan Walor (T-19, -2) led the Internet popularity contest for the third straight day with thousands of hits on his player detail page. However, leader Derek Chang is now a very close second.
Friday Re-cap
A pair of course record tying (since renovation) 63's take co-leaders Derek Chang (T2 - 2008 SE) and Wade Binfield to -10 providing separation between themselves and the bunched up leaderboard behind them.
Derek Chang's round of 63 could be described as unconventional. It could also be described as thrilling. Chang made birdies at what are statistically the hardest holes on the course. Starting the round by parring the 1st and 4th par 5's and birdying the par 4 2nd and 3rd. And it just kept going from there - including an eagle 2 on the par 4 12th hole. In fact, Chang's round was flawless up to the par 3 16th hole which is the shortest hole on the course - this after birdying the 468 yard par 4 15th which plays as the 1st or 2nd hardest hole consistently in the Southeastern. A disappointing bogie on 17 - the easiest hole on the course statistically led to a birdie on 18 for a total of 8-under par and 10-under par overall.
Chang finished T-2 last year seemingly coming out of nowhere - and rode that success throughout the rest of the 2008 summer. He had just graduated high-school and was on his way to Minnesota where he had a very solid Freshman year. I remember watching the end of the tournament last year when it occurred to me that he looked so young and small - and competed on a grand scale with kids twice his size.
When Derek showed up this year however, it looked as if he had put on about 25 pounds of pure muscle and was hitting the ball about 25 yards farther as well. When I talked to his father about the change he said, "that's what college has done for him... and that's not from drinking beer either".
Binfield took a much more quiet and conventional route. Taking advantage of the par 5's and tossing in solid birdies around the other holes. In fact, among the crowd gathered around the leaderboard, it was almost as if Wade "snuck up" on us. He just kept making birdies and eventually we caught on to the fact that he was tied for the lead and had a shot at the course record.
We had just scrambled to watch Chang's finish - so we went right back out to watch Binfield finish and see if he could card the elusive 9-under 62 (the official course record pre-renovation). Binfield finished birdie, par for his own 8-under par 63 with both players now shooting identical rounds of 69 and 63. Tied at the top at 10 under.
The leaders were also able to separate themselves from the field. And if these two get it going on Saturday, they may prove to be uncatchable. But as we all know, this course and this tournament are famous for the "anything can happen" factor. One thing is for sure - there will be a lot of interested people watching. Including those players at even par or better who will be thinking "whoa" (as in slow down) on Saturday.
Zeyu He and Drew Ernst round out the top four at -7 and -6 respectively.
Locally, qualifier Adam Cooper (T-2 2009 Georgia Mid-Am) carded a nice round of 67 to jump 30 positions on the leaderboard to T-10 after a ho-hum 72 on Thursday. Bringing his total to 3-under par 139. Cooper's round included an interesting start where a par was not made until the 6th hole. Starting bogie, birdie, birdie, birdie, bogey. But after those holes, Cooper seemed to take old man par by the shirt collar playing solidly with 10 pars and 3 birdies to finish.
Long hitter Patrick Coleman ranks second among locals at T-15 (-2). Coleman eagled the par 5 17th after a wedge second to get his round back in order and finished even par for the day after an opening 69 Thursday. Coleman has been a familiar face around CCC and it's good to see a great young guy doing well. Cason Hammock (T-3 2008 US Amateur Pub-Links) and Bobby Brent III are both at T-21.
Four time Champion Wright Waddell is T-25 after carding rounds of 70-72 for even par. Defending Champion Mitch Krywulycz stumbled a bit to finish T-36 after a 75 on Friday. Double bogies at the 8th and 13th cost the long hitting Australian. Both players will need something special on moving day to get back in the thick of things.

Thursday re-cap
The tournament got underway on a steamy Thursday in Columbus, GA. A pair of 66's lead the way with a bunched up leaderboard. Maybe as bunched up as we can remember! 39 players finished at par or better on Thursday and a host of talented players are lurking just over par. The breeze kicked up a bit in the afternoon, but with the temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, it might have been the first welcomed wind in the history of golf!
Friday play is now underway and we are already seeing some good scores out on the course!
