George Bryan IV is without a doubt a special player.
After checking many cards on day one of the tournament, I was a bit surprised to see that the course at CCC was holding up to the field. There had been so little rain early in the year, that the rough had not come in the way the committee would like to see it. But apparently the firm and fast conditions were holding their own.
Late in the day, I was told by one of the competitors, "don't worry, you're about to see a nice score. The guy behind us has been lights out all day".
I added up the scores twice, and said, "Wow, 64?". Mr. Bryan stated confidently, but almost with an "awe shucks" tone, "yeah, I left a few out there". After a brief pause, I looked up to see Mr. Bryan with one of the biggest smiles I had ever seen.
I knew I had just met the 2007 Champion.
I also knew that Mr. Bryan had just tied the course record since the renovation of 2002/2003. That record only lasted 2 days as Jason Flowers from Valdosta, GA shot a new post renovation record 63 on Saturday.
Mr. Bryan, a USC Gamecock All-American followed his 64 with rounds of 69 Friday and a 67 on Saturday and was able to withstand his toughest round of 73 on Sunday to secure a three-shot win with a total score of 273. A new record since the renovation. Wright Waddell of Columbus, Ga., finished second in the 77-man field.
Mr. Bryan, who hails from Columbia, S.C., led South Carolina as a freshman with five top-20 finishes in his rookie season. He was selected to the PING All-Southeast Region team and earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Like I said, Mr. Bryan is indeed a special player.
Congratulations George Bryan IV, the 2007 Southeastern Amateur champion. Job well done.
